In 2020, we won an invited competition to design a new village centre with residential development. Since Polom already has its own historic centre - the newly renovated village square with adjacent amenities, we were looking for a way to embrace the site and bring new qualities to the village.

The basic consideration of our proposal is the functional connection of these two centres and defining their character - a functional village with civic amenities and a newly emerging space offering housing, amenities and recreation. Their character is distinct and yet complementary to each other and form a whole.

The water fortress and the Polom pond will thus become a leisure centre - housing with space for sports and cultural activities, relaxation and active recreation. The proposal takes full advantage of the recreational potential of the mature greenery that naturally enters the village and offers it to the inhabitants in the form of a park in the vicinity of the former water fortress Milotička. This can be used for cultural events in the future, from open-air exhibitions to a summer cinema. In front of the fortress, a public space is being created linking the park, the street and the representative front area of the new town hall.

The proposed mass of the pavilion housing responds to the surviving historic structure and complements the edging of the central part of the village with longitudinal mass on the scale of the farmyards. The development unfolds like a fan around the fortress at its centre. The open roofscape again refers to the archetype of village buildings in a modern shell. The restrained material design combines a light range of plaster colours, natural materials and wooden details.

Living and moving in the green are intertwined, forming an organic whole. Nevertheless, the design respects privacy of the residents and the different height levels create more and less exposed places. Still, a large degree of permeability is allowed and the passing visitor is free to discover quiet courtyards, a lively street with shops or enjoy the view of the landscape.

Residential center Velká Polom obtain a building permit in September 2024.
